Coming Around The Mountain

Roger Metto's colorful landscape paintings often evoke a sense of human smallness in the face of a vast but also mysterious nature. He grew up in Kiruna, surrounded by the vast mountain ranges. The motifs he persistently returns to are Kiruna and the surrounding mountain world, which have become a necessity for the images he creates, but also for himself and his history. Here are the snow-capped peaks and the shimmering birch trunks, all interpreted with the artist's colorful, idiosyncratic palette.

Metto is one of our great landscape painters today. In his early works, the references were broader, there was cowboy romance and rocky mountains, the dream of the endless expanses of the Wild West.

Today he returns more and more often to the part of his old hometown that remains unchanged and the vast landscape that spreads out like a panorama in all directions around Kiruna. The new series includes portraits of well-known mountains and places such as Kiruna, Katterjokk and Tuolpagorni.
