About Marcus Eek

Marcus Eek was born in Stockholm in 1968, lives and works in Berlin. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm in 1997.
The artist's reflections on the latest series 'Random Repetere' :
'Pictures say a lot even though they are silent. For me, they are in a field between the eye and the mind. Like looking over the shoulder of someone who is dreaming. And just like in a dream where logic can be absent without it disturbing, I have worked with my latest motifs. The light, color and composition have not been subordinate to the motif but instead played a shared leading role. Like Lego pieces, I have taken apart and put them back together. A color from a sky painted in the 15th century became a floor, an ocean shimmers across the floor and a color by Andy Warhol forms a shadow next to an enlarged brushstroke that now mostly resembles the bark of a tree. A framework that holds together and at the bottom a belief that that field, between the eye and the mind, actually exists and my new images are like postcards from my latest trip.'
Selected exhibitions: Kunstkraftwerk in Leipzig, Helsinki Contemporary Codex in Berlin, Artipelag Stockholm, Mikael Andersen Copenhagen, Galleri Lars Bohman Stockholm, Galleri Charlotte Lund Stockholm, Björkholmen Gallery, Galleri Örsta. Eek has also been awarded the Swedish Arts Council's Work Scholarship.
