About Kristin Andreassen's process

The surface has always been of interest to humanity. It can be seductive, treacherous, cold, hot or have almost any character. Underneath it, processes are taking place that create tensions on the surface. They are our only opportunities to understand what is happening behind the surface. Is it by studying a surface that we can get a glimpse of, or understand what is happening behind it? How do we project our own experiences into the interpretation of a surface?
Kristin is particularly interested in materials and techniques and is constantly testing new techniques and surface possibilities. Her own work in ceramics is very much about surfaces applied to form. Whether she makes abstract shapes or human figures, the hidden messages behind the surface are open to interpretation by the viewer.
In the series 'Inside Out', Kristin Andreassen explores human individuality; the works in the series depict who we are on the inside, when all expectations are lifted. The expressions on the sculptures may at first seem downcast or melancholic, but what the sculptor wants to convey is our existence in total honesty. Without the viewer's expectations of mood, our conceived role in private life as much as in society. When the ideals we are expected to live up to cease, we can take off our "mask" and let the inside come out.
