A contemporary art guide: HELSINKI

GALLERIE FORSBLOM

Heikki Marila | PAINTINGS JAN 16 - FEB 15 2026

Art historical classics never stand still in Heikki Marila's hands. In his interpretations, they are transformed and given new life. In his latest works, he deliberately moves into unknown territory and lets the material guide him towards unexpected forms. The paintings are based on Rachel Ruysch's flower still lifes, a dialogue that Marila began in 2009 and has become increasingly complex.

Over Ruysch's echoes, Marila builds new, shimmering surfaces where gloss and matt interact. Deep blacks and blurred bouquets create images that seem to exist on two parallel planes, where memory and presence collide. The second part of the exhibition, the Golden Age series, consists of abstract paintings with gold that bear faint traces of nature and still life - concentrated archetypes deeply rooted in the tradition of painting.

TAPANI KOKKO | BUTTERFLY Jan 16 - Feb 15 2026

BUTTERFLY | 16 JAN - 15 FEB 2026

Detailed and skillful woodwork is characteristic of Tapani Kokko's artistry. His sculptures combine humor and imagination with playful interpretations of art history and human idiosyncrasies. With rough-hewn surfaces, rich ornamentation and a clear joy in creation, the figures take on a lively and slightly mischievous character.

Kokko draws inspiration from Baroque and Rococo, but gives the historical styles a raw, folk touch – sometimes described as “folk baroque” or “outsider rococo”. Wood is often combined with textiles, gold paint, glitter and older objects, which gives the works a fairy-tale expression. Kokko was born in 1969, educated at the Academy of Fine Arts and works in Orimattila, Finland. His works are in several important Finnish museum collections.

SUSANNE GOTTBERG | STILL STILL Jan 16 - Feb 15 2026

Susanne Gottberg's new paintings move on multiple human frequencies and balance between proximity and something elusive. They seem to have their own gaze and create encounters where the painting functions as a boundary or mediating surface between the physical and the beyond the visible.

Her artistry revolves around spatiality and painting as an object – built of material, touch and layers of actions. Gottberg paints paintings about painting, where each work creates its own space and interacts with the viewer’s surroundings. Through sanded or polished surfaces, often with a waxy character, the painting appears as a skin between inner and outer worlds. Even the wood in her work is active and co-creative. Gottberg, born in 1964, was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts and is represented in several significant museum collections.

MAKASIINI CONTEMPORARY

Konepajanpasaasi 2

Makasiini Contemporary is an established contemporary art gallery in Helsinki with a clear curatorial profile and a long-term work with both established and emerging artists. The gallery works mainly with painting and sculpture, but moves freely within contemporary art practices where materiality, spatiality and artistic process are in focus. The program is characterized by carefully produced solo exhibitions and a continuous dialogue between artist, work and audience. In addition to Helsinki, Makasiini Contemporary also operates a gallery in Turku , which enables parallel presentations and deepens the gallery's role within the Finnish and Nordic art scene.
