Divine hybrids

The florist industry has a significant but often invisible impact on both the environment and the people behind the flower production. Many cut flowers are grown in countries such as Kenya, Colombia and Ecuador, where the climate is favorable but resources are often limited. To meet global demand, the flowers are transported by air and refrigerated transport, which gives rise to large amounts of carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, floriculture requires a lot of water – something that creates problems in areas where water is already in short supply. Chemical use is also extensive, as flowers are not food and therefore not subject to the same regulations. Pesticides are used on a large scale and can contaminate both soil and water.

The social consequences are equally serious. Many workers in the flower industry face low wages, long working hours and a lack of protective equipment, despite handling toxic substances on a daily basis. Women often make up the majority of the workforce and are particularly exposed to health risks. The right to organize is often restricted, making it difficult to improve working conditions.

Creator of new species

''Humanity is destroying the planet. This destruction has sparked my interest in preserving nature. I started by painting flowers – thousands of flowers in all stages of life and decay. I wanted to preserve its beauty and prevent its extinction.

Suddenly, in my dreams and in my subconscious, I have visions of new flowers. Non-existent species. I began to paint these strange new hybrids and realized that I was not only creating new species of plants, but that I was building a whole new world. Flower by flower, petal by petal.

Inspired as much by Swedish nature as by one of its most famous scientists, I left life in New York City to move back to Sweden. Now I follow in Carl von Linné's footsteps by naming and officially documenting every new hybrid flower species I create.

I am building a new, magical hybrid world – and this is just the beginning…'' - Brandy Kraft

New series - Passage

The new limited edition series Passage consists of three motifs; Root, Growth and Vigor. These depict the hybrids' journey from birth to full bloom. Root symbolizes birth, and the motif also pays homage to Botticelli's 'Birth of Venus'. Growth is the depiction of youth; finding one's voice, getting to know oneself and discovering the world. In Vigor, the artist wants to show the strength of perfection.

Limited edition of 35, signed and numbered. These are now available at the gallery and online.

Photography, painting and sculpture

Brandy Kraft's repertoire includes painting, photography and sculpture. However, the sculptural element is always present. With meticulous precision, the artist sculpts her motifs; one leaf at a time. The photographic series can be compared to portraits, often with draped fabrics where the species in question is captured against a background. In the paintings, the expression is slightly dreamy. In these, the hybrids either float or the focus dives into a fragment of the hybrids where unexpected details are presented to the viewer.
